10 Days Down....Many More to Go!
It's been 10 days since arrival in Germany. I'm not sure if it's gone by quick. Kind of. I think so! Leah has been learning more everyday about her job. A little different than back home, but many of the concepts apply, so it's not all totally new. Thank goodness! I get to hang out in the office and watch everyone come and go. Our desk is right by the door, so we see everyone. Makes it easy to get to know who's who. The guys down towards the other end of the office hosted a pancake breakfast for everyone today. They knew that Leah is a vegetarian and trying to be vegan as much as possible, so they bought the pancake mix without buttermilk and made sure they were cooked on a separate griddle from the bacon and sausage. It was very thoughtful! And the pancakes were tasty too!
So, even though we're here in Germany, our job is to support the folks down in Africa. There are a lot of people here and down there doing a lot of good things for the people of Africa, the US, and the world. We've gained a better perspective on many things happening and it feels good to be a part of it. Be proud of your troops downrange! They're in the middle of it, working hard to get it done! We hope to get a first hand experience in the coming months.
We haven't done a whole lot of significant things since our arrival. One off-base dinner at an Italian restaurant, a few stops to the, the BX, and a few runs to figure out where everything is on foot. Leah bought a rice cooker/slow cooker and has it stashed in our little kitchen area. I don't think we're supposed to have them, but we're not going to eat out everyday. Leah doesn't want to be as round as me....So she's already made one batch of stuffed pepper soup. With the limited appliances, it turned out pretty good! We're teaming up with a co-worker to make tortilla soup in the office tomorrow! Yum! She's super excited and is looking forward to making more soups in the room as well. It will be great for winter time.
The weather here has been spectacular. Cool in the mornings (upper 40s, low 50s) and in the 70s during the day. The fall colors seem to be at about peak too, so it's quite pretty. There are a lot of trees on base. It's some nice scenery when running or even driving around. Sounds like the weather's not going to last though. Rain is in the forecast. We've been hearing people say the winter is similar to home in regards to how long it stays dark in the winter. Be prepared to not see the sun much. I think we can handle it.
The only other big thing is that we're headed to Amsterdam on Saturday! YAY! The other 128th guys mentioned that they signed up for a tour with the agency on base. We went over there last week and sure enough, there were some spots left! It's an early wake up call. We depart at 1am Saturday. Yikes! But heck, it's Amsterdam, right? A new city and country for both of us! We have tickets to the Van Gogh museum, and there is one planned stop with the tour, but I think that's about it. We'll see what the day brings! The next post will surely be about that day. Until then, we miss everyone back home and hope you are all well!
