Back to the States!

Travel Buddy!

Cheeky learning deployed Finance
Last week I had the opportunity to travel back to the states for a few days. A few folks from Ramstein and I, with Cheeky in tow, flew to Shaw AF Base in Sumter, SC. We were there to attend and help facilitate a refresher course for all Finance personnel that are preparing to deploy to various places around the world. We were there for our 6 specific folks that are going to be with me at Ramstein and down in Africa.

It was a great opportunity to meet all the incoming people I'll be working with. Everyone finance wise, changes over in the next month or so except for me. So I'll have a whole new crew to work with by the end of January. I'm looking forward to it!

The class was also a good refresher on how finance works in a deployed arena. We don’t get to do a lot of practice very often, so it was good to brush off the cobwebs. The class is more focused on folks traveling to the middle east and southwest Asia, so the Africa folks got their own breakout sessions. We do things a little differently, so we needed to highlight what they’ll actually be doing, what their missions are and what their locations look like. I’m happy I’ve been to a few of the locations already, so I could speak from first hand knowledge.

Aside from the class, my trip back to the states was fairly uneventful. The group went out to lunch one day at the bowling alley. The only veggie friendly option was a “veggie wrap.” Sounds nice, but it was really just a pita bread with the burger toppings of lettuce, tomato, and onion. Mmm. At least for the group dinner there was one veggie pasta dish amongst 100 seafood dishes. I also had just enough time to finish a mermaid tail blanket for Charlotte’s Christmas present. I was able to mail it home from South Carolina instead of Germany. Now I know it will arrive on time!

Santa was at the Columbia Airport

It was apparently exceedingly hot on earth!

The best part of going to that class was leaving. Why? Because the next day Ross arrived in Germany!!! Many more blog posts will be following soon. We have some fun things planned while he’s here for 3 weeks. I am so excited to have him here!

Stats for the trip:
Subway sandwiches eaten: 6
Miles ran: 5
Days to recover from jet lag: 3
Annoying German ladies talking loudly next to me on an overnight flight: 2

  1. Do you ever stay in one spot???

Yeaaaaah! ...Ross is there and I bet you guys will make the 3-weeks go plenty (too) fast!

So happy that you guys will be together for Christmas! I hope the government gives you some R&R time so you can both enjoy seeing some of the sights... and hope they don't send you away to some remote place while he's there.

I'll wait (somewhat) patiently to hear all about the fun!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! ...sending my love to you both!
