A new adventure: Departure

After a few months of recess, the pine is ready for adventure once again. This time, it's a six month quest to Afghanistan, so get ready to cross another country or two off the list!

I signed up for this deployment what seems like forever ago, and the departure date had always seemed so far away - until now! I'm looking forward to some adventure, challenge, culture, and perhaps even some renewal.


Thanks to everyone who showed up! I tried to keep the departure as low-key as possible, y'all didn't need to spend your Monday at the boring airport (especially after the long and exciting weekend) but it was nice to see you, I'll miss you, and be back before you know it.




MKE airport was awesome as always - quiet, quick, and clean. The hop to Baltimore was easy and short, and now I wait 24 hours for my next jet. It's gray and rainy here, more rain than I'll probably see for the next six months.

Tomorrow's travel promises to be a doozie, I'll get that story posted ASAP. Until then, just making sure I still have access to post on this crazy blog.

  Eight years ago, when Ross and I’s relationship was just barely blooming, he asked me to join him on a trip to Hawaii. His long time friends Richard and Cindy would also be there. Not one to pass up an adventure, I accepted! Hawaii - Final Day!

  Our flight on Sunday didn’t take off until almost 9pm, so we had time to do some last minute things. We took our time getting going in the morning and tried to come up with a game plan. We were a little tired from the mediocre bed and the karaoke that was going on in a nearby room the night before. This hotel earned all of its 2 stars.   We decided to start our day with some breakfast from the same shop down the street that we had gone to the other day then head over to the Honolulu Zoo. The zoo opened at 10 and there was quite a line to get in! But we didn’t have anywhere else to be and the line moved fairly quickly. The Honolulu Zoo is currently #4 in the USA Today contest for best zoo in the US. Voting is still going on, so vote for your favorite! Milwaukee wasn’t on the list, otherwise we would have voted for our hometown.  Inside of the bathroom stall doors had fun facts! Road Trip 2019 Day 5: Welcome to the West Coast

Day 5 - 26 June 2019 Day 5! Neither of us was as sore as I expected after all those hours hiking yesterday. The alarm woke us up at 7am. We were shooting for an 8am departure, but it was 8:33 when we got on the road. I made us a pot of coffee so we could fill our mugs for the drive. We also finally got to see the scenery of Star/Boise, ID. It was beautiful and the houses were as big as we had guessed the night before.  Once we got on the road we crossed into Oregon at 9:19am. About 40 minutes later we arrived at our first stop, Baker City, OR. How could we not stop?! We had breakfast at the Lone Pine cafe. I had some avocado toast and Ross had some Huevos Rancheros. Both were very tasty! The weather was great, so we sat outside. Baker City’s main drag is cute and has an old feel to it.
