Road Trip 2019 Day 5: Welcome to the West Coast

Day 5 - 26 June 2019

Day 5! Neither of us was as sore as I expected after all those hours hiking yesterday. The alarm woke us up at 7am. We were shooting for an 8am departure, but it was 8:33 when we got on the road. I made us a pot of coffee so we could fill our mugs for the drive. We also finally got to see the scenery of Star/Boise, ID. It was beautiful and the houses were as big as we had guessed the night before.

Once we got on the road we crossed into Oregon at 9:19am. About 40 minutes later we arrived at our first stop, Baker City, OR. How could we not stop?! We had breakfast at the Lone Pine cafe. I had some avocado toast and Ross had some Huevos Rancheros. Both were very tasty! The weather was great, so we sat outside. Baker City’s main drag is cute and has an old feel to it. It was fairly quiet and we had a nice meal.

Cider Stop #1
We got back on the road and headed for Washington. We crossed that border about 12:20pm. We also gained an hour by crossing into Pacific Standard Time.  We read that Eastern Washington was great wine country, so Ross looked up some places for us to stop. He surprised me and lead us to a Cidery just outside of Benton City, WA. We had a flight at d’s Wicked Cider House. The flight had 5 of their own ciders and one outsider since they were out of their most popular cider. The flavors were: Baked Apple, Green Apple, Cherry Vanilla, Baer Naked, Cran Gran, and the outsider, Neon Margarita. The place was small and there were two ladies enjoying some cider and a snack when we arrived. We had a plate of hummus and veggies to go with our fight. We both decided that the Baked Apple was the best. It tasted like Apple Pie and we bought a 6-pack to go. All of them were very good. Since I’m a lightweight, Ross took over driving from this point forward.

Our original plan had allotted time to do a horseback vineyard tour with a dinner near Benton City, but since the company never replied to my email about wether or not they had a vegetarian option, we skipped it. Their loss! So instead of a winery tour, we did a second cidery visit in Yakima. Ross found Tieton Cider Works. We ordered a flight of their ciders, headed outside to their patio, sipped on cider and played a game of bags. Ross had an early commanding lead of 7-1, but I hit my stride and was victorious 21-11. I will say, the boards for the bags was almost as bouncy as a trampoline. The bags bounced off of them like I’ve never seen before. It was comical and made the game a little more of a challenge! We still had a 3 hour drive to our Air BnB in Edmonds, WA, so we got out of Yakima around 4:30 after spending a surprising hour and a half at Tieton Cider.
Cider Stop #2
While on our drive to Edmonds, we hit 30,000 on the Mazda! We started this trip with 27, 488 on the odometer. So many miles! Another 71 miles later, we arrived in Edmonds at 7:15pm. We booked another Air BnB. This one was a self-check in, so we never met our hosts, like the place in Star, ID. It was a nice little space attached to the host’s home. Once we got our stuff into the room, we decided to walk to dinner. Our place was only a few blocks from Puget Sound. We found a Thai place for dinner and it was fabulous. Finally some tofu and vegetables! I had a green curry and Ross had a crispy noodle dish with tofu, veggies, and a read curry type sauce. Such flavors! We were very happy.

It was after 9pm when we were done with dinner and the sun was going down. We walked along the appropriately named Sunset Drive and enjoyed a beautiful sunset over the Sound. With that, another day successfully complete! We finally made it to the West Coast!
