Beach Day!
Today (21 Feb) was a fairly easy-going day, but still exhausting! We slept in again, because it's vacation, and finally got out of bed around 9:30. Charlotte was already up and Colleen wanted to go down to the dock to see a rocket launch, so the two of them went to check it out. Meanwhile, Ross and I cooked up some breakfast.
Once our bellies were all full and Charlotte knocked out a little more homework, we got dressed and packed up for the beach! Ross really enjoys relaxing on a beach, so we had to make sure at least one of our days included some much needed and well-deserved beach time. We got down to the beach entrance about 12:30, but they weren't allowing vehicles onto the beach for some reason. We thought it was because the beach was at capacity, but it sure didn't seem like it once we rolled onto the beach about 20 minutes later. One positive note about having to wait, is that Charlotte got more homework done. (I'm really trying to get her to finish it before our time at Universal!) By 1pm we were parked and ready to relax.
Ross promptly found a sunny spot while Charlotte and I took a walk down the beach. Before we got very far, she found most of an empty crab shell, with a few guts remaining, so we turned around to drop that off at the car before returning to our walk. She collected quite a few shells and we enjoyed watching the pelicans, ospreys, and other sea birds diving into the water looking for lunch. The water was surprisingly cold, but our feet got used to it for the most part as we walked up and down the beach. After a solid walk, and hitting my step goal for the day, we decided to take a seat and soak up a little sun.
Colleen and Charlotte tried to get the giant bubbles going, but the bubble solution had thickened up too much from sitting the past year or so. This was a bit of a bummer because making giant bubbles is both fun for the bubble maker and entertaining for all the beach goers! I remember making bubbles for several hours the last time I visited.
Ross moved spots and acquired my headphones while I opened a book and Charlotte watched a video for a bit. Eventually Charlotte was ready to go back in the water. I followed her down to the water's edge as she splashed around in the chilly water. We tried to get her to body surf a wave or two, but she wasn't quite far enough out to catch a good wave. There were plenty of waves to ride though!
Eventually the sun started to go down and we all were getting a little hungry since we skipped lunch in favor of mint oreo thins and a few handfuls of Cheetos. But before we could go eat we needed to feed the seagulls! Ross and I had fed the gulls a few years ago and it was quite entertaining. We brought some packs of Ritz crackers and were ready for a.....Flock of Seagulls....
There was only one near us, but we wanted to see how long it would take for more gulls to realize free food was being tossed around. The answer is 0.2 seconds. Almost instantaneously we had another dozen or more birds testing their bravery to snag a tasty crumb of buttery Ritz. We had them literally eating out of our hands. And toes. And mouths! (Well, Ross and Charlotte were holding crackers in their mouths, but not me) We had mostly seagulls, a few tiny piper type birds and one pigeon. No one got pooped on and fun was had by all.
NOW it was time for the humans to get food. Wait. No. Charlotte needed to try body surfing again. She spent another 15 or so minutes frolicking in the water having a good time. We were all glad she was willing to get in that water! Once she had enough, then it was really really time for us to eat. After getting most of the sand off of us, we said goodbye to the beach and headed inland.
Mexican was our meal of choice tonight and Azteca D'Oro was the restaurant. We had too much food, but it was very tasty. Ross and I also had some delicious margaritas. We all ended up with some leftovers and full bellies. We made a quick stop at the Publix next door to grab some snacks for Universal. The evening is ending with mixing up a cold pasta salad to bring with us, laundry, homework, blog writing, and shell cleaning. I am always reminded how draining the sun can be! We are all pretty sleepy and ready to call it a night. Tomorrow we head to Universal!!
