New day in New York

 16 June 2022

Today we said good bye to Vermont (for now) and hello to New York! It was our longest drive of the trip, but still very manageable. The route we took avoided tolls and apparently most actual highways too. We zigged and zagged through the back country of Vermont. We did find where all the cows were hiding though. I had commented to Ross earlier in the trip that if Vermont makes all this cheese, where are all their cows? Well, they are in western Vermont. We found several dairy farms on our trek today.

But before all of that! We had to stop for breakfast! Our first stop after spending every last minute in our fun BnB, was to the Hungry Mountain CoOp. It’s just like Outpost. I had a vegan BLT and Ross chose a vegan Bahn Mi, but it was called a VermontMi. We each liked our own choices better. The sandwiches were substantial enough that we each had a half of them and saved the rest for later. It would come in handy for our drive.

Once brunch was done then we could zig and zag through the back country of Vermont. I’m not complaining since the views were great the entire time. We drove along side some rivers and lakes, got to cross over Lake Champlain again when entering New York, so even though the drive was a solid 2 1/2 hours, it was not boring.

We arrived at our next Air BnB in Saranac Lake, NY about 20 min early. We decided it was close enough and let ourselves in. It is basically a one bedroom apartment within a large house. It’s fine, but doesn’t have the charm of either of the last two places. We unloaded the car and relaxed for a little while. It took us a bit to decide where we wanted to go for dinner. We had to keep an eye on the weather, because it looked like we’d encounter rain for the first time on our trip. After much deliberating, we decided to head back over to Lake Placid to eat at Lake Placid Pub and Brewery.

Lake Placid looks like a neat city, despite all the construction going on. I am looking forward to exploring it more in the coming days. As we drove into town, we found a municipal lot that had free parking (at least free for the evening). We found a spot and checked out a few stores before heading to dinner. One of the stores we wanted to go to, the Imagination Station had a short wait to get in, but in no time we were browsing all the goods. I found a slew of Lake Placid ornaments right away and picked one out. We roamed around a little more and picked up a small board/card game to play later. Right before checking out, I spotted some different ornaments and made a last minute switch! It is an Adirondack ornament instead of Lake Placid. It better encompasses our time in NY. Ross is still on the hunt for a tshirt of some sort, but we still have a few days!

The clouds were starting to get dark, so it was time to walk over to the Pub. We did get a few drops of rain on us along the way, but nothing major. We got our table, some drinks, and put in our food order. The rain started to come down right after we got inside. Glad we missed it! Dinner was once again tasty. Some pretzel bites to start and a small Detroit style mushroom pizza. I was stuffed!

By the time we were finished, the rain had lightened up. I was once again exhausted, so we headed back to the car and back to Saranac Lake. We plan to hike Baker Mountain in the morning and explore more of Lake Placid tomorrow afternoon. Let’s hope the rain holds off!

Stats for the day:

Steps: 4,458
Hours in the car today: 3+
Olympic references in Lake Placid: 1,000,000,000000000
