Milwaukee River Kayak
It’s time for another vacation! This one should be a bit more relaxed than the busy, yet fun trip to Orlando we had this past February. Our vacation started yesterday, Friday 10 June at home. We wanted to spend a day with our friends Tom, Jess, Brandon, and Kristin - especially since Kristin will be gone on her own “vacation” for 6 months soon.
We decided to rent some kayaks through Milwaukee Kayak Company and we paddled down the Milwaukee river for almost 4 hours. I think a bunch of us have wanted to try this for quite a while, but never got to it. Ross and I decided to take a chance that it wouldn’t rain and hopped on our scooters. We met up with the crew at 10:30. The other four had beat us there and were all just about ready with their life jackets on. We gathered our things, and were in our kayaks in no time.
Ross was map master and we first headed down a canal that went past the Harley museum. We didn’t travel too far down that section of river because we were hoping to make it up to Lakefront Brewery for a snack before turning around. So northbound we went!
It was a bit overcast and a comfortable temp for us the entire time on the water. That wind, however, gave us a few challenges as we made our way. Kayaking is a real neat way to see the city! We saw a fun mural that used the water drains as inspiration, lots of birds - including baby geese, and all sorts of boats.
We did make it all the way up to Lakefront and successfully docked our boats without anyone falling in. We grabbed a snack (plant-based tenders and cheese curds for Ross and I), enjoyed a little sun and relaxation, then expertly hopped back into our boats. We had a nice process to get us back in the water and Jess being last, made it look like she had done this a hundred times.
Even though it felt like the wind was against us on our return, the water current seemed to be with us, so we were moving along pretty well. We had just enough time to paddle past our docking point and get a few photos in front of the Hoan Bridge before having to be back at our designated 2:30 drop-off time. You don’t often get to see the Hoan from the water, so it was pretty neat!
After we disembarked from our boats, we tried to get our land legs back under us and sat around for a few minutes. I found the merch section and decided I needed a crop top. I look forward to wearing it on vacation!
As much as we wanted to continue hanging out with our friends, we needed to get home. Our poor Murphy cat will be staying at the Vet for our trip. He has a bladder infection and is on FOUR medications to help him get over it. We didn’t want Colleen to have to give him all of those and to monitor him to make sure he’s actually still able to use the litter box. So, for a little piece of mind, the Murph will spend 11 days at the vet. But he does get a double cat condo, so hopefully he’ll get all the attention from everyone and isn’t too mad at us. Simon gets the entire house to himself and all of Colleen’s attention.
Once Murphy was dropped off and a quick stop by Colleen’s house, we figured we better start packing! Our Uber was picking us up at 4:15am….UGH. I thought vacation was for sleeping in. Well, Delta changed our flight, so we got a bonus leg to our journey and an hour earlier too. We eventually got all packed an in bed by 9:30.
Stats for the day:
Hours in the Kayak: 3 1/2
Steps: 8,492
Number of Bakers that got sunburned: 2
Tom got sunburned too!! So glad the sunscreen kept the inside of the bag burn free. LoL
