Hawaii - Final Day!
Our flight on Sunday didn’t take off until almost 9pm, so we had time to do some last minute things. We took our time getting going in the morning and tried to come up with a game plan. We were a little tired from the mediocre bed and the karaoke that was going on in a nearby room the night before. This hotel earned all of its 2 stars.
We decided to start our day with some breakfast from the same shop down the street that we had gone to the other day then head over to the Honolulu Zoo. The zoo opened at 10 and there was quite a line to get in! But we didn’t have anywhere else to be and the line moved fairly quickly. The Honolulu Zoo is currently #4 in the USA Today contest for best zoo in the US. Voting is still going on, so vote for your favorite! Milwaukee wasn’t on the list, otherwise we would have voted for our hometown.

Inside of the bathroom stall doors had fun facts! |
The zoo was nice with lots of wandering paths and open spaces to sit and relax. We saw lots of birds that we couldn’t add to our bird list and one that we could! I didn’t think we’d get a chance to add any more to our list! We enjoyed the zoo and saw plenty of animals. From there we headed back to our hotel to grab our luggage.
We debated on either going to a museum that was free with our hotel stay or go back to the shopping area to look for any last minute treasures. Shopping won. We went to the bus station and tried to get on the first bus that would take us to our destination. We quickly learned that only one route allows luggage. So we waited another 15-20 minutes for the “20”. We popped into a few stores and I tried a few things on. I was feeling like I should get a flowery Hawaiian type outfit to bring some warmth back to WI. We found ourselves in Tori Richard again (a place I stopped in the day before and Ross and I also browsed in a different location the other day). The guy working there remembered me from yesterday even though I had only been in the shop for a few minutes. This time I decided to try a few things on. He was super helpful and gave some good opinions and suggestions. I wasn’t quite sure about all the options I had tried until we pulled a dress off a display. Bingo! I found a winner. We were also going to stop into a jewelry store that I had been in twice already, but they were closed until 5:30. Fate had decided for us.
It was still 4+ hours until our flight, but we figured we could stop at the USO like last time to kill some time. We hopped back on the bus for the hour-ish ride. We found our stop and the USO, but sadly due to a lack of volunteers, the USO was closed at 4pm. Dang. So, we checked our bag, went through TSA and found some dinner. And that was that! We boarded and got ready for the long haul, overnight flight. We did get an inflight meal that was not nearly as good as the outbound flight. Cold pasta. Meh. Kind of a bonus was that this flight had screens in the seat. I watched one movie, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and then tried to sleep. Airplane sleeping is not great, so it was intermittent for the both of us for the 7 1/2 hour flight.
Our layover is in Houston (on Monday morning) and it’s the coldest airport! 4 hours here is not great. Maybe it’s just preparing us for being back at home. Regardless, we’re both looking forward to being home, seeing our kitties, and sleeping in our own bed.
